Japan is one of the easiest countries in the world to stay connected in and one of the easiest to misjudge. Coverage is excellent almost everywhere a traveller goes, including underground, but the country runs on apps that assume you are online — transit routing, IC card top-ups, restaurant queues, translation — and the moments you need them most are the moments you are furthest from wifi. This guide covers which networks you actually get, where the signal genuinely drops, what the arrival at each major airport looks like, and how much data a Japan trip really consumes.
Which networks you actually get in Japan
Japan has four national operators. NTT Docomo has the widest rural and mountain footprint and is the network most travel eSIMs prefer. KDDI (au) is close behind and historically strong along the coasts and in the north. SoftBank is dense in the major metropolitan areas. Rakuten Mobile is the newest and its own coverage is thinner outside the cities, though it roams onto au where its network does not reach.
A travel eSIM roams onto one or more of these rather than belonging to any of them. The practical consequence is that in a place where one operator has a gap, a roaming profile that can reach a second network will hand over, which is a real advantage in mountainous terrain.
5G is deployed widely in the cities and along the main corridors, and LTE is effectively universal in populated areas. Do not choose a plan on the promise of a specific speed — what matters in Japan is that the LTE floor is high everywhere, not that 5G is reachable in a particular street.
Where coverage actually fails
Japan's dead spots are geographic and predictable, which makes them easy to plan around.
The Japanese Alps are the main one. Hiking routes above the tree line in the Kamikochi, Norikura and Hotaka areas lose signal for long stretches, and the same is true of the higher trails on Mount Fuji outside the climbing season when the temporary base stations are not running. Download offline maps before you start walking.
Long rail tunnels are the second. The Seikan Tunnel to Hokkaido runs under the sea for tens of kilometres with no service. Shinkansen tunnels through the mountain spine between Tokyo and Kanazawa, and on the Kyushu line, produce repeated short drops that will interrupt a video call but not a download that can resume.
Rural Hokkaido, the interior of Shikoku, and the smaller Okinawan and Seto Inland Sea islands have real gaps away from the main roads. Ferries lose signal in open water and pick it up again approaching port.
Underground is the opposite of a problem: Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo subways all have continuous coverage in tunnels and on platforms, which is not true of every country and is worth knowing before you plan to be offline on your commute.
Getting around, and what each mode needs
Trains are where most of your data goes. Route planning in Japan is genuinely complex — multiple private operators overlapping with JR in the same city — so travellers lean on apps constantly, and every lookup is a network request. Budget for using a transit app far more often than you would at home.
Shinkansen services on the main lines offer onboard wifi, which is usable for messaging but is shared across a full train and is not a substitute for your own connection. Local and rapid trains generally do not.
IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and their regional equivalents) are the standard way to pay for transit and convenience stores. The physical cards need no data. The versions added to a phone wallet need a connection to top up, which is a small but real dependency: running out of data and out of IC balance at the same time is an avoidable bad afternoon.
Long-distance buses and rural branch lines take you into the areas listed above, so treat any journey off the main corridors as a stretch where you should already have your directions saved.
Arriving: Narita, Haneda, Kansai and the rest
Haneda is the smoothest arrival. Signal is available throughout the terminals including at the gate, so an eSIM installed before you flew will connect while you are still taxiing. The Keikyu line and Tokyo Monorail into the city both have coverage.
Narita is the same in the terminal, and the Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner both keep signal for most of the run into Tokyo, with short tunnel interruptions.
Kansai International is on an artificial island, and the connection holds across the bridge on both the rail and bus routes into Osaka and Kyoto.
All the major airports have free wifi that is adequate for downloading an eSIM profile if you arrive without one, but the process is slower and more stressful than doing it at home, and the registration walls on some airport networks are themselves easier to clear with a working connection. Install before you fly.
Chubu Centrair, New Chitose, Fukuoka and Naha all behave the same way: coverage in the terminal, coverage on the transfer into the city.
What actually eats data in Japan
Transit routing is the biggest single consumer for most visitors, simply through frequency of use. Each lookup is small, but a day of navigating Tokyo can involve dozens.
Translation is the second, and it is heavier than people expect because the useful mode is camera translation pointed at menus, signs and packaging, which uploads images. If you plan to lean on it, download the offline Japanese language pack before you travel — it removes most of that cost.
Photo backup is the third and by far the largest if left unrestricted. Japan is a country people photograph heavily, and a day in Kyoto can produce several gigabytes of uploads if your phone is set to back up over cellular.
Realistically, a traveller doing maps, transit, messaging, translation and moderate photo sharing uses about 500 to 800 MB per day. A one-week trip fits comfortably in 5 GB; two weeks in 10 GB. Add a size if you will tether a laptop or stream on long train journeys.
SIM registration and the law
Japan requires identity verification to obtain a Japanese mobile number, which is why buying a voice-capable local SIM involves showing your passport and, for longer contracts, a residence card.
Data-only service is treated differently. Prepaid data SIMs and travel eSIMs that carry no Japanese number are sold to visitors without that process, which is why an eSIM can be bought online and installed before you arrive with no paperwork at all.
The practical takeaway: if you need a Japanese phone number — for a long stay, a rental agreement, a bank account, or a service that insists on a domestic number — a travel eSIM is not the right tool and a local contract is. For a trip, the data-only route is both legal and standard.
Regional plans and combining Japan with neighbours
Japan is included in most Asia regional bundles, which are worth considering if the same trip takes in South Korea, Taiwan or Hong Kong. For a Japan-only trip a country plan is almost always the better value, because regional coverage is priced for its breadth.
Japan has no land borders, so there is no accidental roaming to worry about — the situation that catches people out in Europe simply does not arise here.
One quirk worth knowing: Okinawa is fully covered by Japanese networks and needs no separate plan, despite being closer to Taipei than to Tokyo.
Seasons and events that congest the network
Japan has three national travel peaks that fill both the trains and the cells serving them. New Year, from around the end of December into the first week of January, Golden Week from late April into the first days of May, and Obon in the middle of August. During these periods, expect slower data at major stations, on packed Shinkansen platforms and in tourist districts — not an outage, but visibly degraded at exactly the times you are trying to check a connection.
Cherry blossom season in late March and early April concentrates enormous crowds into a small number of parks. Ueno, Meguro and Osaka Castle at peak bloom on a weekend afternoon are among the few places in Japan where you may genuinely struggle to load anything.
Large fireworks festivals through July and August have the same effect on a smaller footprint. If you are meeting people at one, agree the meeting point before you go rather than relying on messaging when you arrive.
Hotspot and multiple devices
