The United States has three national networks with genuinely different footprints, and which one a plan uses changes your experience more than in most countries. Cities and interstates are well covered; the mountain west, the desert southwest and the national parks are not, and the gaps are large enough to matter on a road trip. This guide covers which networks you get, where coverage actually stops, and what an American trip consumes.

Which networks you actually get in the USA

The US has three national operators. Verizon has historically had the strongest rural and coverage-map reputation. AT&T has broad national coverage with particular strength in the south and along the interstates. T-Mobile has expanded its footprint substantially and has extensive mid-band 5G in populated areas.

Every other American brand you see is a virtual operator on one of these three. A travel eSIM roams onto the host networks directly.

5G is widely deployed and the labelling is confusing: what different carriers call 5G varies considerably in what it actually delivers, and a 5G indicator on your phone in the US tells you less than it does elsewhere. LTE coverage is what actually matters for a traveller and it is extensive in populated areas.

The practical point: coverage in the US is not uniform between operators in the way it is in, say, Korea. In the mountain west and the rural plains, whether your roaming profile can reach a particular network is the difference between signal and none.

Where coverage actually fails

The national parks are the gap most visitors actually hit, because they are exactly where people go. Yellowstone has coverage in the developed areas — Old Faithful, Canyon, Mammoth — and effectively none across the rest of the park. Yosemite Valley has partial coverage and the high country has none. Glacier, Big Bend, Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon's north rim are similar.

The interior west generally. Long stretches of Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas have coverage along the interstates and very little on the state highways between towns. Route 50 across Nevada is marketed as the loneliest road in America and the network map agrees.

Desert routes in Arizona, New Mexico and southeastern California lose coverage away from the main roads, and this is genuinely hazardous in summer heat.

Appalachian valleys, the Adirondacks and the north woods of Maine, Michigan and Minnesota have real gaps despite being in the east.

Alaska is a different proposition entirely: coverage in Anchorage, Fairbanks and along the main road corridors, and effectively none across the vast majority of the state.

Amtrak long-distance routes cross precisely these areas, so a two-day train journey is substantially offline.

Road trips: the practical planning

The US road trip is the archetypal American holiday and it is where connectivity planning matters most.

Download offline maps for your whole route before you set out, not town by town. The moment you notice the signal has gone is usually well past the point where downloading is possible.

Fuel range matters more than data in the emptiest areas. Stretches of Nevada, Utah and west Texas have long distances between fuel stops, and running low is a more immediate problem than being unreachable.

Cell coverage along interstates is generally reliable; it is the state and county roads that people take for the scenery where it disappears.

If you are heading into a national park or a genuinely remote area, tell someone your plan and expected return. Park rangers make this point constantly and it is the same advice as for the Australian outback, for the same reasons.

Getting around, and what each mode needs

Ride-hailing is ubiquitous in cities and large towns and thins quickly beyond them. In rural America it may not exist at all.

City transit varies enormously. New York's subway has coverage on platforms and increasingly in tunnels; Washington, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco all have partial underground coverage. Most systems accept contactless payment now, which needs no data at the gate.

Domestic flights cover the distances. Airports are comprehensively covered and most now have free wifi.

Amtrak connects cities and offers wifi on many routes, which is generally weak and worse on the long-distance services precisely where you have no cellular signal either.

Car rental is the default for anything outside a major city, and it brings the coverage question above.

Arriving: the major gateways

JFK, Newark, LAX, O'Hare, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Atlanta and Dallas are all comprehensively covered with free wifi and covered ground transport connections.

The AirTrain at JFK, the LIRR, the Chicago L from O'Hare and the BART from SFO are all covered for their runs.

US immigration queues can be long at peak times, and having a working connection while you wait is genuinely useful for rearranging onward transport if you are cutting it fine.

Airport wifi in the US is generally good and free, so downloading a profile on arrival is workable — but installing at home is simpler and avoids doing it while jet-lagged in a queue.

What actually eats data in the USA

Maps and navigation lead by a wide margin, because American distances mean navigation is a continuous activity rather than an occasional check.

Streaming is second and is the item most likely to exhaust a plan — long drives and long flights invite it.

Restaurant, hotel and attraction booking apps come next.

Photo backup is the largest uncontrolled consumer. Set it to wifi-only, particularly on a national parks trip where you will generate a great deal.

A realistic figure for maps, messaging and moderate social use is 400 to 700 MB per day, higher on a road trip because of continuous navigation. A 5 GB plan covers a week of city travel; 10 GB is a better fit for a road trip or two weeks.

SIM registration and the law

The United States does not require identity registration to buy a prepaid SIM, which makes it one of the simpler countries in this catalogue on that point.

The reason travellers use an eSIM here is therefore not to avoid paperwork but to avoid the cost and the errand — US prepaid plans are priced for residents on monthly cycles, and buying one for a ten-day trip is poor value.

Regional plans, Canada and Mexico

The USA appears in North America regional bundles, which typically cover the US, Canada and Mexico together. For a trip crossing any of those borders that is usually the right purchase.

A US-only plan does not cover Canada or Mexico. This catches people out on Niagara Falls day trips, on San Diego to Tijuana crossings, and on drives through the Detroit-Windsor tunnel.

The land borders are long and in border towns your phone can pick up the neighbouring country's network from the US side. El Paso, Detroit, Buffalo and Blaine are all places this happens.

Hawaii and Alaska are covered by a US plan with no distinction, though Alaskan coverage itself is limited as described above.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are usually but not always included — check the list if that is your destination.

Seasons and events that congest the network

Thanksgiving week in late November is the heaviest domestic travel period of the year, and the airports and interstates reflect it. Christmas and New Year follow.

Summer in the national parks concentrates enormous numbers into the small developed areas that have coverage, which is exactly where the network is. Yellowstone and Yosemite in July are the clearest cases.

Large events produce sharp local congestion: the Super Bowl, major music festivals, New Year in Times Square, and the college football schedule in university towns.

Hurricane season on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts from June to November brings genuine infrastructure risk. In an affected area, mobile service can fail when it is most needed, and official emergency information should be followed rather than social media.
