Slovenske železnice runs a modest network. Slower than the bus on most domestic routes but useful for the international connections to Austria, Italy and Croatia.

The country is small enough to cross in about two hours, and a car unlocks the Alps, the Karst and the wine regions properly. A motorway vignette is required and is sold digitally and at petrol stations.

Ljubljana has a public bike-share scheme and the city is flat and compact. Longer-distance routes follow the rivers.
