Cepelinai
Grated potato dumplings the size of a fist, shaped like airships, stuffed with minced pork and served under sour cream and fried pork crackling. One is usually enough.
Traditional restaurants everywhere; village guesthouses make the better version.
Šaltibarščiai
Cold beetroot soup on a kefir base, vivid pink, with dill, cucumber and boiled egg, served with a plate of hot boiled potatoes on the side. The temperature contrast is the point.
Every menu from late spring to early autumn.

The kibinai houses along the main street in Trakai, on the way to the castle.

Vėdarai
Potato sausage — grated potato piped into a casing and baked until the skin crisps. Served with bacon fat.

Markets and delicatessens; Vilnius's Halės market.
Kepta duona
Sticks of dark rye bread fried and rubbed with garlic, usually buried under grated cheese. The standard thing to order with beer.
Any pub. Ordering it is close to compulsory.
Šakotis
A tall spiked cake built by dripping batter onto a rotating spit over an open flame, layer by layer, until it grows branches. Sold whole or by the ring, and the centrepiece at weddings.
Markets and bakeries; watch one being turned at a food festival if you can.
Farmhouse beer
Lithuania kept a living farmhouse brewing tradition through the twentieth century that most of Europe lost — unfiltered raw ales fermented with house yeast strains, from the Biržai and Pasvalys area in the north.
Specialist beer bars in Vilnius and Kaunas; the breweries themselves around Biržai.
Midus
Mead, made here as a serious drink rather than a novelty, in dry and spiced versions as well as sweet. Stakliškės is the best-known producer.
Bars in Vilnius old town; the distillery at Stakliškės.

KaunasKaunas
The interwar capital, and the reason it holds an exceptional stock of 1920s and 1930s modernist architecture recognised at European level. Add the Ninth Fort on the edge of the city, a Holocaust site and memorial.

Hill of Crossesnear Šiauliai
A mound covered in an uncountable number of crosses, left by pilgrims and repeatedly bulldozed under Soviet rule and rebuilt each time. Quiet, strange and unlike any other site in the Baltics.

The dominant intercity mode, reaching almost every town from the autobusų stotis in each city. Vilnius to Kaunas runs constantly and needs no planning.

Train
LTG Link runs a small network — Vilnius to Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Trakai. It is comfortable and often quicker than the coach on those routes, but does not reach much else.
low
Vilnius city transport
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city. Tickets are bought through the city transport app or loaded onto a rechargeable card and validated when you board; buying from the driver costs more.
very low
Ferry to the Curonian Spit
Two crossings from Klaipėda: a short passenger ferry from the old town quay, and a separate vehicle ferry from the Smiltynė terminal further south. Cars entering the national park pay an environmental charge on top of the fare.
low on foot, more with a car
Car hire
Roads are good and distances short; the A1 links Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. A car is what makes Žemaitija, the Hill of Crosses and the Aukštaitija lakes practical in one trip.

Bolt
Bolt is what people actually use, in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and the larger towns, and it is inexpensive. Do not assume Uber will be there. Street taxis exist but the app is cheaper and removes any argument about the fare.

Mambo ya msingi
| Day of Restoration of the State | 16 February | Marks the 1918 declaration. Public holiday, flags everywhere, events in Vilnius and Kaunas. |
| Day of Restoration of Independence | 11 March | The second independence day, marking 1990 and the break from the Soviet Union. Also a public holiday — the two are distinct and both matter here. |
| Easter | Easter Sunday and Easter Monday | Two-day holiday; shops closed on the Sunday and domestic travel heavy. |
| Mother's Day and Father's Day | the first Sunday in May and the first Sunday in June | Both are public holidays. Restaurants are fully booked on those Sundays. |
| Joninės | 24 June | Midsummer, celebrated by lakes and rivers with bonfires and wreaths on the water. Cities empty toward the countryside the evening before. |
| Statehood Day | 6 July | Marks the coronation of Mindaugas in 1253. The national anthem is sung simultaneously in the evening, in Lithuania and by communities abroad. |
| Žolinė | 15 August | Assumption. Peak summer; the coast and the Curonian Spit are at their fullest. |
| All Saints and All Souls | 1 and 2 November | Two consecutive public holidays. Cemeteries are lit with candles in enormous numbers and roads out of the cities are congested. |
