India has cheap, fast and widely available mobile data, and it is unusually difficult for a visitor to buy. Getting a local SIM involves documentation, a local address and a verification process that can take days, which is why travel eSIMs solve a bigger problem here than in most countries. Coverage itself is broad along the corridors people travel and thins fast in the mountains and the interior. This guide covers what you get, where it stops, and what a trip actually consumes.
Why a local SIM is hard, and an eSIM is not
India requires identity and address verification for any SIM carrying an Indian number. For a foreign visitor that typically means a passport, a visa, passport photographs, a local address that can be verified, and sometimes a local reference. Activation is not instant — the verification step can take a day or more, and it may fail.
This is not an obstacle course invented by shops; it is a regulatory requirement, and it is applied.
A data-only travel eSIM roams onto Indian networks as a foreign profile, carries no Indian number, and falls outside that process entirely. It can be bought online and installed before you arrive with nothing to present.

Which networks you actually get in India
India has three main operators after heavy consolidation. Reliance Jio is the largest by subscribers and has the most extensive 4G and 5G footprint, having built out nationally in a short period. Bharti Airtel is a strong second with broad coverage and a good reputation in urban areas. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is the third, with a more limited footprint in some regions. BSNL, the state operator, has coverage in areas the private networks reach less well.

5G is deployed across the major cities and expanding rapidly. 4G coverage is extensive and, importantly, data is cheap enough in India that network capacity is heavily used — congestion in dense urban areas is a more common experience than absence of coverage.
Where coverage actually fails
The Himalaya is the largest gap. Ladakh outside Leh, the high passes, Spiti, the Zanskar valley and the trekking routes in Uttarakhand and Himachal all lose service for long stretches. Some of these areas also have restrictions on which SIMs work at all near sensitive borders, and roaming profiles may be limited there — do not plan on connectivity in the high Himalaya.
The northeast states have coverage in the towns and considerably less between them, and parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are thin.
The Thar desert away from the main roads, the interior of the Western Ghats, and the forested parts of central India — Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha's interior — have real gaps.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have coverage in Port Blair and the developed areas and very little elsewhere. Connectivity to the islands has historically been limited overall.
Long-distance trains cross large stretches of countryside and the signal comes and goes throughout. Expect intermittent rather than continuous connection on an overnight journey.
Backwater boats in Kerala and coastal ferries keep signal near shore and lose it further out.
Getting around, and what each mode needs
Ride-hailing is central and heavily used, for cars and for auto-rickshaws. It solves the fare negotiation problem and is one of the highest-value uses of a data plan in India. It needs a connection at the moment of booking, which is often at a roadside.
Trains are the backbone of long-distance travel and the booking system is online. Reservations are made in advance, and the platform and coach position information that matters on the day is checked by app at the station.
Metro systems in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata are covered, including in tunnels, and use physical tokens or cards that need no data.
Domestic flights cover the distances trains do not, and airports are well covered.
Driving yourself is uncommon for visitors and hiring a car with a driver is the norm. Coverage along the national highways is good; state roads through the interior are where the gaps appear.
Arriving: Delhi, Mumbai and the rest
Delhi Indira Gandhi is comprehensively covered, and the Airport Express metro into the centre is covered for the whole run.
Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji is the same, with covered road transfers.
Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Goa and Kochi all have terminal coverage and covered transfers.
Arriving already connected matters more in India than in most places. Many international flights land late at night, the arrivals areas are busy, and the difference between opening a ride-hailing app and negotiating at a taxi rank at 2am is substantial.
Airport wifi exists at the major airports but frequently requires an OTP sent to a phone number, which is precisely the thing you do not have. This is a specific and common trap: do not count on airport wifi in India as your route to getting connected.
What actually eats data in India
Ride-hailing and maps lead, used many times a day.
Train and travel booking apps come next, checked repeatedly.
Payment apps have become central. India's instant payment system is used everywhere from large shops to street vendors, and while a visitor's ability to use it depends on the specific app and bank arrangements, card and cash both remain widely accepted. Where you can use it, each transaction needs a connection.
Translation is a smaller category than in China or Japan because English is widely used on signage and in business, particularly in the cities and tourist infrastructure.
Photo backup is the largest uncontrolled consumer. Set it to wifi-only.
A realistic figure for maps, ride-hailing, messaging and moderate social use is 500 to 800 MB per day. A 5 GB plan covers a week; 10 GB covers two weeks or a longer multi-city trip.
Regional plans and combining with neighbours
India appears in Asia regional bundles, though not in all of them — check the country list rather than assuming, since some Asia plans are weighted toward Southeast and East Asia.
Nepal and Sri Lanka are common combinations and are separate countries requiring their own coverage. Bhutan likewise.
The land borders with Nepal and Bangladesh have the usual network handover behaviour in the border districts.
For an India-only trip a country plan is better value than a broad regional one, given the country's size means you will not use the breadth.
Border regions near Pakistan and China, and parts of Kashmir and the northeast, have connectivity restrictions that go beyond ordinary coverage and can include service suspensions. Check current government travel advice for any area you plan to visit near those borders.
Seasons and events that congest the network
Diwali in October or November is the largest, with dates shifting each year. Domestic travel peaks, cities are extremely busy, and network load at transport hubs and in commercial districts rises sharply.
Holi in March produces a shorter, more concentrated version, with the additional practical point that it involves coloured powder and water — protect your phone.
The Kumbh Mela, held on a rotating multi-year cycle at four locations, gathers crowds of a scale that no network is built for. If your trip coincides with one, plan communications on the assumption that data will not work in the crowd.
The monsoon from June to September causes flooding and infrastructure disruption in different regions at different times, which affects connectivity as well as travel. Mumbai in a heavy monsoon week is the clearest case.
Wedding season from November to February fills domestic flights and hotels rather than networks specifically.
